The Marat Sade

Execution - Marat Sade, BOV 1996 The Persecution and Assassination of Marat as performed by the inmates of the Asylum at Charenton under the direction of the Marquis de Sade

written by Peter Weiss

I played an inmate who in 'the play within the play' portrays a Military Representative.  The cast included twelve students from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, which along with the Bristol Old Vic Theatre Company was celebrating their joint 50th birthday. This play was performed at the Theatre Royal, King Street, Bristol, England from November 15th to 30th 1996, directed by Andy Hay for the Bristol Old Vic Company.

Some reviews:

"This play within a play fairly ricochets through the theatre, at times hypnotic, violent and cruel, at others musical and comedic.  The 30-strong cast was simply spellbinding . . . .  This was an epic production that resonated in the mind long after the rapturously received denouement."
Bath Chronicle

"This production . . . is frequently mesmerizing and looks striking, set in a great stone prison."
Western Daily Press

"The theatricality of the piece is is effectively conveyed - most notably in a series of energetically staged songs and set pieces, led with grotesque flamboyance by a an excellent chorus of clowns-cum-lunatics."
